Kawaii painting style

I came across the term "kawaii" while surfing the net one day about a year ago. It means "cute culture" and is most widely represented by the cartoon characters that inhabit the world of "Hello Kitty" - but there are hundreds and hundreds of other characters from all sorts of other companies and creators that are done in the kawaii style.

Having spent so much of my career designing cartoon characters for advertising and packaging, I was fascinated by this totally different approach - so seemingly simple in design, yet amazingly expressive and appealing.

I had also had a strong desire to try painting in oils. I decided to meld my experimentation with oils to my experimentation with designing characters in the kawaii style.

The following paintings are a small sample of the many I have already executed and continue to produce.
